Iloilo is one of those Philippine cities that doesn’t need dramatic beaches or towering skyscrapers to leave an impression.
Its charm comes from somewhere else — historic streets, beautiful churches, riverside walks, old mansions, and one of the most distinctive food cultures in the Philippines.
I actually lived in Iloilo for around six months.
I wasn’t there as a tourist and didn’t spend those months visiting every attraction in the city, so this guide isn’t going to pretend otherwise. But living there gave me a small glimpse of everyday life in Iloilo — and now it’s time to explore the city properly as a traveler.
And yes, if you’ve spent time in the Philippines, you probably know Mang Inasal.

Iloilo became a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network for Gastronomy in 2023, reflecting the importance of food to the city’s culture and economy. UNESCO notes that the city has more than 300 restaurants and a long culinary tradition connected to local life and fiestas.

Iloilo grew into an important trading port during the Spanish colonial period, particularly through the sugar and textile industries, and traces of that prosperity can still be seen in its historic architecture.

Take a little time to explore the plaza as well rather than simply photographing the church and leaving.

You can’t talk about Iloilo food without starting with La Paz Batchoy.
This comforting noodle soup is traditionally made with noodles, pork broth, meat, pork offal, crushed chicharon and other toppings.
Its roots are closely associated with La Paz Public Market, and several well-known Batchoy restaurants trace their history back to Iloilo.
For first-time visitors, this is one dish I would put near the top of the list.

And here’s the one Iloilo food fact I already knew from living there. 😄
Mang Inasal began in Iloilo City.
Mang Inasal says its first branch opened at Robinsons Place Iloilo in December 2003, founded by Edgar “Injap” Sia II.
Today you’ll see Mang Inasal branches all over the Philippines, but its story started right here in Iloilo.
If you’ve never tried it, the combination is simple and very Filipino:
grilled chicken + rice + calamansi + soy sauce + chicken oil.
And yes — unlimited rice has certainly helped make the chain memorable. 😂

The setting near Villa Beach and its emphasis on seafood make it a good choice when you want something completely different from Batchoy and city-center dining.

Another long-established Iloilo name is Tatoy’s Manokan and Seafoods.

Don’t stop after Batchoy and Pancit Molo.
Depending on what you find during your trip, keep an eye out for traditional Ilonggo dishes and ingredients such as KBL (Kadyos, Baboy, Langka), fresh seafood and local desserts.
You don’t have to hunt down every famous dish.
Two or three genuinely local meals will tell you more about Iloilo than eating at familiar international chains every day.

This isn’t somewhere you need to treat like a major sightseeing attraction.
Instead, it’s useful as an evening stop after a day of heritage sightseeing.
Walk around, grab dinner or coffee, and see how dramatically Iloilo has changed from the historic streets you explored earlier.

🚤 Should You Add Guimaras?
Absolutely — if you have enough time.
Guimaras is just across the water from Iloilo and gives you a completely different experience with island scenery, beaches, rural landscapes, and its famous mangoes. 🥭🏝️
But I wouldn’t squeeze Guimaras into a packed Iloilo day.
If you only have three days, concentrate on Iloilo.
If you have four or more days, consider adding a dedicated Guimaras day trip — or, even better, save it for a separate trip if you want to explore the island properly.

Iloilo is relatively straightforward to explore using a combination of taxis, jeepneys, modern jeepneys and other local transportation.
For visitors unfamiliar with local routes, taxis or app-based transportation can be easier for moving between attractions.
Traditional and modern jeepneys can be cheaper and provide a more local experience, but routes may be confusing for first-time visitors.
