Davao City is one of the Philippines’ most interesting destinations for travelers who want to experience more than beaches. The city combines a clean and organized urban environment with wildlife, nature, family-friendly attractions, and easy access to the beautiful waters of Samal Island.
What I remember most about Davao is how clean the city felt when I visited. Even though Davao is a large and busy city, I personally found it much more comfortable and organized than I expected.
And this trip has another special reason for me.
I have personally visited Davao and Samal Island, including a trip with my family and friends’ family. While our time on Samal was mostly about relaxing at a beachfront resort, Davao City itself gave us several memorable experiences.
From seeing magnificent Philippine Eagles and enormous crocodiles to taking fun family photos at the Upside Down Museum, Davao offers plenty of reasons to spend a few days exploring before heading across the water to Samal.

🚗 How to Get Around Davao
Davao is a large city, and having your own vehicle can make exploring attractions outside the city center much easier.
When I visited Davao, I drove around the city myself, and there is one thing I would definitely tell anyone planning to rent a car:
Pay close attention to the speed-limit signs.
Davao City has different speed limits depending on the road, so drivers should always follow the posted signs rather than assuming that the entire city has the same limit.

One of the places I would definitely recommend visiting in Davao is the Philippine Eagle Center.
The center is located in Malagos, Davao City, and is dedicated to the conservation of the Philippine Eagle and other endemic wildlife.
But honestly, the official description doesn’t fully explain what it feels like to actually stand there and see these birds.
The Philippine Eagle is huge, powerful, and incredibly beautiful.

The eagles are much larger and more impressive than you might expect from photographs, and seeing them in person is something you will remember.

The park is known for its crocodile facilities, but visitors can also see other animals including raptors, monkeys, bearcats, snakes, birds, and other reptiles.

Some of them are absolutely enormous.
If you have never seen large crocodiles up close before, this is definitely an experience.

After exploring Davao City, it is time to head toward the beach.
Samal Island is one of the easiest island escapes from Davao City, which is one of the reasons I think combining the two destinations makes so much sense.
Samal is surprisingly close to Davao City. Depending on your departure point and the type of boat you take, the crossing can be relatively short, making Samal one of the most convenient island getaways from Davao.
So when planning your trip, don’t think of Samal as a faraway island destination.
It is practically Davao’s backyard.
🚤 How to Get from Davao City to Samal Island
There are several ways to get across to Samal depending on where you are staying.
Travelers can use passenger boats, Ro-Ro ferries, or resort-operated boat transfers depending on their destination.
If your destination is Paradise Island Park & Beach Resort, the transfer is particularly convenient because the resort operates its own boat connection between Davao and Samal.
The resort’s current official information lists scheduled ferry services from its Davao-side terminal, although schedules can change, so it is always best to check directly with the resort before traveling.

Start your trip by getting familiar with Davao.
Spend the first day exploring the city and enjoying some of its most accessible attractions.
You can visit People’s Park, explore local food spots, and spend some time around the city center.
If you enjoy food, Davao’s newly introduced tourism circuits also include market experiences and downtown food crawls, giving visitors another way to experience the city’s local culture and cuisine.

Use the evening to enjoy dinner and prepare for the next day’s sightseeing.
If you’re driving, this is also a good time to check your route for the following day.
📅 Day 2 – Wildlife & Family Attractions
This is the day I would dedicate to the places I personally enjoyed.
Start with the Philippine Eagle Center and then continue to Davao Crocodile Park.
Seeing the Philippine Eagles up close and then experiencing the enormous crocodiles gives you two completely different wildlife experiences in one day.
Later, if you still have enough energy, visit the Upside Down Museum.

Once you arrive, check in, have lunch, and enjoy the beach.

After your activity, return to the resort, collect your belongings, and take your boat back toward Davao.
If you have a late flight, leave enough time for the boat crossing and your journey to the airport.

One advantage of combining Davao and Samal is that you don’t necessarily need to build the entire trip around a short seasonal window.
Samal’s city government describes the island as having rainfall distributed throughout the year and a typhoon-free climate, although weather conditions can still affect boat trips and water activities.
For that reason, I would still check the weather forecast before planning island-hopping or other boat-based activities.
If your priority is beach time, choose a period with favorable weather and calmer seas rather than focusing only on a particular month.

❤️ Final Thoughts
Davao and Samal Island offer two very different sides of the Philippines.
Davao gives you wildlife, city life, local food, nature, and family attractions.
Samal gives you beaches, resorts, blue water, and time to slow down.
And for me, the combination has an extra meaning because I have personally experienced it with my family and friends.
I remember Davao as a clean and comfortable city, driving around while keeping an eye on the speed limits, seeing those huge Philippine Eagles, being amazed by the crocodiles, and taking fun family photos at the Upside Down Museum.
Then we crossed over to Samal and did something much simpler.
We stayed at Paradise Island Park & Beach Resort, enjoyed the beachfront location, and spent a full day together.
Sometimes a trip doesn’t need to be packed with attractions to become a good memory.
Sometimes you just need a beautiful place, the people you care about, and enough time to enjoy it.
